Ingredients

3/4 cup sugar3/4 cup water1/2 vanilla bean, splitSANGRIA:1 package (12 ounces) frozen unsweetened strawberries2 medium peaches, peeled and sliced2 medium kiwifruit, peeled and sliced1 can (11 ounces) mandarin oranges, undrained1 jar (10 ounces) maraschino cherries, undrained1 can (8 ounces) unsweetened pineapple chunks, undrained1 medium orange, thinly sliced1 medium lime, thinly sliced1 medium lemon, thinly sliced2 bottles (750 milliliters each) dry red wine2 cups orange juice2/3 cup orange liqueur2/3 cup Cognac or brandy1/4 cup lemon juice3 tablespoons lime juice1 bottle (1 liter) carbonated water, chilled

Preparation

In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, water and vanilla. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 3-5 minutes or until sugar is dissolved, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat; cool to room temperature. Discard vanilla bean.

Divide the fruits between 2 large pitchers. Add the wine, orange juice, liqueur, Cognac, lemon juice, lime juice and vanilla mixture. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Just before serving, stir in carbonated water.
