Ingredients
1 cup sugar1/4 cup shortening1 egg, beaten1 cup all-purpose flour1 teaspoon baking soda1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon1/4 teaspoon salt2 cups shredded peeled tart apples1/4 cup chopped walnutsVANILLA SAUCE:1 cup sugar2 tablespoons cornstarch1/2 cup half-and-half cream1/2 cup butter1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Preparation
In a bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add egg and mix well. Add the dry ingredients; mix well. Fold in the apples and walnuts.
Spread in a greased 8-in. square baking pan. Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until cake tests done.
For sauce, combine sugar, cornstarch and cream in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat; boil for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat. Add butter and vanilla; stir until butter is melted. Serve warm over warm cake.
